WVU women survives catfight to defeat the Herd!

Let that be a lesson to you WVU women! Just because you’re the 12th ranked team in the nation, that you play in the tough Big East, that you’re a bunch of seniors that think you know better doesn’t mean you can sleepwalk through the Herd and expect to win. For Marshall this is their Super Bowl and they sure played like a there was a championship was on the line. Fortunately, the Eers played just enough to barely get by the Lady Herd 58-51. The victory may be bittersweet however as senior Meg Bulger aggravated her left knee injury yet again and her status is unknown whether she’ll be able to put on her WVU uniform ever again. Best wishes for a speedy recovery Meg and we hope the best for you.

In the first half, I never seen a more listless, lackadaisical effort coming from a Coach Carey team then what I saw here. Despite shooting 24 percent from the field the Lady Herd scrapped and crawled for every loose ball, for every rebounds, for every squeak of the sneaker. Yet the Eers lead by just one at the half at 23-22.

Marshall came out the gate and left the Eers flat-footed again this time taking a 29-23 lead with 17 minutes left in the game. WVU got back to their senses and scored the next nine points of the game to take over the lead at 32-29. Then it became a back and forth affair with Sanni and Owens doing the scoring while the Lady Herd’s Kizzy Hart kept using the top of the key screen to knock down some treys. Marshall women could not make a free throw to save a life as they finished 14 of 26 and that ultimately was their downfall.

The play of the game was when WVU was leading by just three with 43 seconds left and had only 3 seconds on the shot clock. Senior LaQuita Owens inbounded the ball from the baseline. Everyone at the Charleston Civic Center knew who they were going to give the ball too. As the whistle blew Sanni was double-covered. That left senior Sparkle Davis wide open and then came running toward the hoop. Owens lasers the inbound pass toward her. Davis caught it and made the uncontested layup. That was ballgame from there.

Sanni led the Eers with 17 points and 10 rebounds another double-double. Point guard Ashley Powell scored 13 while Owens chipped in with 11 points. West Virginia betters their record to 15-3 while the Lady Herd falls to 11-8. So the first part of the Capital Classic goes to WVU. I’m sure Coach Huggs will get this team ready because this team is gonna get Marshall’s best shot. Good luck and GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MOUNTAINEERS!

Really, you thought Sanni would get the ball on that inbounds? What is she going to do with 3 seconds left? I was making fun of the color commentator lady for saying that. I was pretty sure would go to a shooter. Also, Meg looked pretty all right after the game. You could see her walking around on the court at the end of the telecast and she wasn’t favoring.

That color commentator was such a tool at times. She was brutal to listen too. Good to hear about Meg being OK. Her knee was iced and with a little rest hopefully she’ll be back at it Saturday probably off the bench.
