Tailgate Review: Week 1
By MountaineerBob on Sep 5, 2007 in Beer, Reviews, Tailgating
Everyone’s favorite thing, 2nd only to the actual game, is tailgating at Mountaineer Stadium. I will post a short “review” of how things went down at every home game this year. Feel free to add to this in the comments section and in the forums.
Weather: Little too warm for my liking for a tailgate but nice and warm, 85 - 90 degrees, no clouds, slight breeze.
Traffic: We arrived in Morgantown from Pittsburgh around 11:00 am, kick off was 3:30pm. There was no traffic at all getting into Morgantown. A little heavy around the Coliseum, but other than that not bad at all.
Parking: Paid $30 to park above the Light Blue Lot. A little pricey if you ask me, but I knew from experience, paying for a good spot is essential. The lot was well maintained and felt safe, (see post about my cooler getting stolen last year). Not a lot of tailgating going on in this lot though, a few but more upscale and not “Pit-like”.
Atmosphere: As usual. AWESOME. People were jazzed about the rankings this year and the prospect of going 12-0 and finally getting the respect we deserve. I will say though, things at the beginning were a little less crazy that usual. But it did get crazy, toward the start of the game.
It was a beauty-ful day in Morgantown on Saturday. Not a cloud in the sky (I know this from the sunburn I got, and yes I applied SPF twice!), the smell of bratz and pepperoni rolls filled the air, and the sounds of bottle caps crackin’ open were everywhere. Everyone seemed to be a very calm and collected mood. Not as rowdy as it was last year for the Marshall season opener last year.
The Blue lot was the same as usual, although around Noon I did notice some empty spots. We aren’t used to these evening games. The Light Blue lot was recently renovated I think. There is now a sidewalk along Don Nehlen Drive that runs adjacent to the Light Blue Lot. This makes for even easier access to the lot and a lot safer for the people walking along that street. It used to get hairy after a game around there.
I had my off-roadin’ 4-Wheelin’ cooler set and ready to go with a 30 pack of Miller Lite and 6′er of Tuppers Hop Pocket Ale for when the urge for a good beer hit me, and off we went into the open arms of the best tailgating scene in the Big East and arguably whole NCAA football community.
Pics from the Tailgate: (this will be a weekly home game feature, I hope…)

Ah, nothing like tailgating! I like this segment. Since this is college, different games have different atmospheres. Last year, me and my buddies arrived at 12:00 for the 7:00 Rutgers game. We cooked up a killer chilli, had some cobs, and a shit load of beer!Judging by the crowd in that parkinglot you would have thought it was one of these early season games.
I wish I would have made it for the first game! There’s nothing like it and you have to take in this warm weather while it’s there!
As for the best tailgate. That’s hands down in the Big East. The only team that would rival us is Pitt (but their fickle fans don’t show up when they have losing seasons). I believe Rutgers fans still are bussed to the stadium. I’m not sure how Cardinal fans are, but hell last time they came to Morgantown they sure were friendly!
I think WVU needs a few more years of being in the top 10 to really secure the tailgating culture. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s a great time. However, I’m not sure how we stack up against some of the more entrenched institutions.

About a half-hour after you took that pic Bob Huggins came walking by with some high school recuits. He is a bad ass. I shook the hand of greatness! I can’t wait for Mountaineer basketball!

Bob Huggins greatness? You shook the hand of a drunkin fool who can careless about academic standards. His track record at Cincinnati shows that he a great recruiter of thugs. Greatness is a coach that can recruit and win games with kids that actually pass classes on their own and graduate. Which was rarely the case at Cincinnati. Great? Far from it. GO Bruins!
