A prediction that gets it right »

On CollegeFootballNews.com I found a prediction for the BCS Bowls that is right on! This is how they think it will play out now that they can see how the computers are ranking teams. I’m like what I’m reading. Check it out and make sure you read #2!!

There’s no need to watch college football until January. Now that the initial BCS rankings are out, I’m going to clue you in on what’s going to happen in the BCS race. The ten teams in the big money matchups will be …

10. Arizona State – Rose Bowl
No one is believing in the Sun Devils, mainly because no one has seen them play. Those late night games in the desert are always off the map for most, but that’ll soon change. The offensive line has a few issues in pass protection, but with a physical style, to go along with all the normal ASU speed and athleticism, ASU should be able to keep up in home games against Cal and USC, and should be able to overcome an upcoming loss at Oregon to go 11-1 and win the Pac 10 title. Dennis Erickson’s team will then go to Pasadena to play ….

9. Boise State – Rose Bowl
The Rose Bowl will lose the number one team to the BCS Championship game, so it’ll get its first pick from all the at-large teams. Even so, the selection people will be a bit hamstrung by their options, and will end up being happy to get all the Bronco fans streaming down from Boise, while getting huge TV ratings with everyone looking for the 2007 Fiesta Bowl magic to kick in again. There won’t be any Big Ten teams available, and after Boise State beats Hawaii when everyone is watching, and runs the rest of the table, it’ll move up enough in the BCS rankings to get into the top 12 and earn an automatic spot.

8. LSU – Sugar Bowl
The LSU schedule eases up big-time, with the two road games left, after a home date with Auburn, coming against Alabama and Ole Miss. Nick Saban will pull out all the stops against his former team and give the Tide the early signature win in his tenure. The Tigers will still win the West and will still go on to win the SEC title, while also eliminating the East representative from the BCS chase. LSU will sell out the Superdome against …

7. Kansas – Sugar Bowl
If you’re waiting for the schedule to get nasty, it doesn’t get too bad, with road games against Colorado, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, along with home dates against Nebraska and Iowa State. 13th in the initial rankings, Mark Mangino’s team will keep moving up and up as others start dropping with key losses late. KU won’t win the North, losing to Missouri in the regular season finale, but it won’t be by much. Mizzou will lose a rematch in the Big 12 title game to …

6. Oklahoma – Fiesta Bowl
The Sooners will obliterate Iowa State, Texas A&M and Baylor to get into the number two spot in the BCS rankings, after South Florida loses to Rutgers, BC loses to Virginia Tech and LSU loses to Alabama, and then they’ll run into a Texas Tech buzzsaw in Lubbock to ruin the national title hopes. However, they’ll get a whale of a showdown against …

5. Oregon – Fiesta Bowl
The world will jump all over the Ducks, currently tenth in the BCS, after they beat USC (and badly), and ruin Arizona State’s unbeaten season. Just when it seems like they’ll be in the national title discussion, UCLA will pull a performance out of its ear in a shootout in Pasadena.

4. Virginia Tech – Orange Bowl
The Hokies enter the national title picture with a win over Boston College, and then they’ll lose to Georgia Tech to bring things to a screeching halt. However, they’ll beat Florida State, Miami and Virginia, and the Cavaliers will have already lost at least once along the way, forcing a BC – VT rematch in the ACC title game. The Hokies will come up with a second win over the Eagles.

3. South Florida – Orange Bowl
Here we go with the big debate of the 2007 season. South Florida will lose at Rutgers in a thriller, but will beat Connecticut, Cincinnati, Syracuse, Louisville and Pitt to finish 11-1 to earn an automatic spot in the BCS as the Big East champion. The computers will all have the Bulls in the top two, with at least one having them number one, but because of the recency effect, with the voters remembering the Rutgers loss and forgetting about the West Virginia win, the humans will screw things up by putting them just low enough to open the door for ….

2. West Virginia – BCS Championship
Currently ninth in the BCS rankings, the Mountaineers will start creeping up with impressive win after impressive win. They’ll beat Mississippi State, Rutgers, Louisville, Cincinnati, Connecticut and Pitt to finish 11-1, and get just enough love from the computers to go along with the respect from the human polls. I’m not saying it’s right that West Virginia will get in over South Florida, I’m just predicting here. The Mountaineers will get the number two spot, USF will be three, and the college football world will be buzzing.

1. Ohio State – BCS Championship
You’re not happy about it, and SEC fans are going to have a conniption over a Big Ten team getting into the big dance again, but Ohio State is going to make up for past sins. With wins over Michigan State, at Penn State, Wisconsin, Illinois, and at Michigan, in yet another classic, the Buckeyes will earn more respect than it’ll likely receive, and on a mission, they’re not going to make the same mistake two years in a row.

Shocker!God I hope we get to play OSU in the Big Easy! Finally might shut up all the Big 10 dillholes when we give them the Shocker .. just like we did to the SEC fans at the Sugar Bowl.

JWilson Power Rankings - Week 7 »

I have created a Power Ranking system that takes the following objective indicators in to account: current BCS ranking (I’m only doing the math for the top 16 teams…that is your buy in to the tournament), strength of schedule and record and attempted to piece together what a 16 team tournament may look like. Here are the standings at the end of week 7.

Power Ranking Team Points BCS Rank
1 South Florida 13.17 2
2 Ohio State 12.86 1
3 Boston College 12.57 3
4 Kansas 12.00 13
5 Arizona State 11.86 8
6 Kentucky 11.57 7
7 LSU 11.43 4
8 Oregon 11.00 10
9 Oklahoma 10.86 5
10 South Carolina 10.71 6
11 Virginia Tech 10.71 11
12 California 10.50 12
13 West Virginia 10.33 9
14 USC 10.17 14
15 Missouri 9.00 16
16 Florida 8.33 15

When I get Excel reinstalled on my home computer, the formula may become more complex, but I think this is a good start to the First Annual wvmountaineersports.com Division I Playoffs.

Pitt Football in the Pitts »

If your in the mood for some funny shit in Pittsburghese, check out the Dave Wannstedt press conference that took place today. Excuses… Excuses… Excuses…

My favorite Wann-Stache Quote of the Day:

I think I watched 50 games on Saturday. I got up and got a notepad and pencil and that’s all I did was watch games all day looking for things that people are doing that might be of help.

Ahhhh, hey, Dave. Buddy. Your the head coach. You’ve coached all over the place, even in the NFL. Ah, I think you should not have to do this. It’s football buddy.

Walt HarrisPlease… WVU NEVER EVER hire this goof. I think Pitt might have made a phone call to this guy on Sunday.

Mountaineer Madness 2007 »

Make sure you rate this video, it’s my first venture into the YouTube realm. Thanks.

Just got back from a trip to Huggstown. First stop, Midnight Madness. 5,500 other fans and I were there to see Coach Huggins debut at the Coliseum. After his rousing speech at the Coach’s Corner event last week,

I was pumped and the festivities didn’t disappoint. After a laser show, introduction to the players and congratulations messages from Michael Jordan, Nick Lashey (WTF??) and Dick Vitale, Coach Huggins walked out onto center court to face the fans for the first time.Mountaineer and MePeople lined up 20 deep on the court to get players’ autographs. Of course being the dork I am, I was only concerned with one superstar…the Mountaineer. He was there on the Coliseum floor, musket in hand, just waiting for me to ask him for an autograph. Well, not really. I gave him the card I made up with the site information on it and he signed it and handed it back to me with a smile. I did get a picture with him though. My wife humored me and took the picture, but reminded me that he was just a regular guy playing the Mountaineer. Can you tell she isn’t a die-hard fan? Read the rest »

Back to Football: The Sunday Polls & Mississippi State »

BCS LogoThe BCS Poll is out today, the first one of the season. My hats off to USF for their #2 ranking. Every poll has them at #2 by the way, it seems that Auburn win was a lot more impressive now. That is an insane ranking for such a young team. Congrats! Let’s just see if they can stay up there with all of the tough games coming down the pike.

In the other polls out today, WVU fared well, although it seems in the damn computer scoring system in the BCS calculation is killing us. But it’s nice to see that a one loss WVU team is still ranked higher than an undefeated Kansas team. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

The Polls and where we stand

  • USA Today Coaches Poll: #7
  • Harris Poll: #8
  • AP Poll: #9
  • BCS: #9

HOMECOMING!!

This Saturday we host Mississippi State. I’m already reading that some think this might be a trap game for WVU. I did notice that Miss. State hung with Auburn and South Carolina in close games so far this season. Will those games prepare them for what they are walking into at Mountaineer Field on the 2oth?

I don’t think so. The crowd is going to be insane because we’re going to have an extra 3.5 hours to tailgate and we haven’t seen a home game in about a month.

As far as the team goes, they’ll be ready. White is rested and healthy. Slaton wants back in the Heisman Race. Schmitt wants to play 5 different positions. Coach Rod loves to beat the SEC. These guys know what they have to do to get to the Orange Bowl, they will be focused, ready, and rested for Miss State. I can’t wait to beat the other Bulldogs of the SEC! (talk about an identity crisis)

My way way too early prediction for the upcoming game: WVU 58 - Miss State 20

Where’s Waldo….err Steve Slaton? »

Where's Slaton? Is it me, or is Steve Slaton having a less than stellar season so far? You be the Judge. Here are his stats through six games:

  • 112 carries for 625 yards, 9 TDs
  • 12 catches for 179 yards, 1 TD.
  • Avg. 19 carries per game
  • Avg. 104 rushing per game
  • 5.4 yds per carry
  • Ranked 27th in the country in total rushing yards.

Against Syracuse, he had 15 carries for 69 yards. Plus, he’s been kept out of the end zone for two consecutive games. Hardly Heisman candidate numbers at the half way point of the season. Another game with those numbers and his heisman hopes will be completely dashed.

In 2006 he averaged 134 yds per game and 7.0 yds per carry.

So why the drop in numbers? Is it the offensive line? Coaching? Is he looking over his shoulder worried about Devine taking some touches away? Has he lost a step? I think its All of the Above. The loss of Mozes et. al. on the O-line is apparent. Their not hitting their assignments…the big holes that Slaton ran through last year aren’t materializing this year. WVU also had some changes to the coaching staff on the offensive side of the ball…maybe their not on the same page. Slaton shouldn’t be worried about Devine…Yet.

As we get into the heart of the Big East schedule, we’re going to need the old Super Steve Slaton to take over and dominate, especially with Pat White getting banged up every week.
