What the hell is a Sooner anyway? »

Sooner SchoonerI’ll admit it, I don’t really know much about Oklahoma football or their fans. So I decided to find out.

I thought the best way to get the truth about the Sooners was to go straight to the most reliable source, an Oklahoma Sooner fan site. I contacted the guys over at one of the best (I’m sure they would say THE best) Oklahoma sports blogs I could find, The Sooner Schooner, and asked if they would like to engage in a little friendly “How Do Ya Do” back and forth.

They agreed and said they would like to know more about WVU. So we’ve been in contact and will have a series of questions and answers sessions throughout the college bowl season leading up to the true National Championship Game, or as they are calling it, the Fiesta Bowl.

We, as WVU fans, need to know as much about OU before this game so that we can talk shit properly. No one likes an uninformed smack talker.

So look for the series to start on Thursday or Friday of this week and continue until the big game.

An Open Letter to Notre Dame »

Touchdown Jesus(Note: The best way to feel better about your situation is to make fun of someone else!)

Dear Notre Dame Administration, Players and Fans,

America wants you to improve, no NEEDS you to. It’s way too easy for us to make jokes about how you guys have an exclusive TV channel, we hear about your “storied” past, etc. Please take the following three pieces of advice seriously. Touchdown Jesus is weeping:

  1. Change your schedule. I put one together for you (I resisted copying Ohio State’s because entry into the Big 10 would almost guarantee you 7 wins a year…but that’s not good enough
  2. Game Team Comments
1 Army Play them before they warm up
    2 @ Duke
3 Denison University (my Alma Mater) Make sure you guys play exclusively at home, they are nasty on the road
4 @ WVU Delta Gamma Sorority Powder Puff Division Champs
5 Oscoda Area High School Strength of Schedule boost
    6 @ London Silly Nannies
    7 New York Yankees
8 @ Notre Dame’s JV Team I needed to get you another away game
9 Miami Dolphins Early reports put you 7.5 points ahead
    10 Utah State
11 @ Parkersburg High School Neutral Field to be named later
12 Earlham College New in-state rivalry

This should get you at least 7 wins. Only Ohio State and Hawaii have easier schedules.

  3. Join the Big Ten – You’re not good enough to get away with not joining a conference in only football, and we don’t want you in the Big East. We would just trade you off to the Big Ten for Penn State and a TV channel to be named later. The Big Ten would put you with your peers.
  4. Hire Bill Callahan…at least then you’ll have an excuse.

WVU rolls; Overated Pitt gets lucky… again »

Last night the Mountaineers dominated the Duquesne Dukes 92-68 (see highlights here). The poll voters need to wake up and start drinking the Huggins Kool-aid. We are the real deal this year. The team is looking very impressive right now and our passing is especially ON FIRE! Last night was a beautiful thing to watch, it’s making me forget about last Saturday (a little).

Check out what the Dukes coach said about the game:

“I can tell you by far this is the best team we played,” he said.

Everhart said that despite the fact that his team was coming off a five-point loss Wednesday to a Pitt team that is the No. 9 team in the country.

“Even on film, I thought they were a much different basketball team than Pitt,” Everhart insisted after West Virginia’s 92-68 lashing of his Dukes on Saturday night at the WVU Coliseum.

“Their motion, the way they cut, their athleticism. … We just got beat by a better basketball team. From start to finish, they took us out of everything we could do.”

Pitt BBall sucksPitt, on the other hand, is looking very overrated. That #9 ranking is a inflated big-time. I can’t figure out how they keep getting these early season high poll spots. They are playing like garbage and that #9 is going to fall this week with two crap ass showings. They got lucky as hell yesterday, winning a one point game against the Washington Huskies. The game was decided by an instant replay call at the buzzer that took 5 minutes to decide. It should have never came to that. Pitt keeps playing this bad, they won’t even make the Big East tourney.

So the gauge right now is Duquesne. Duquesne is a great team by any means, all I’m saying is Pitt beat them by 5, WVU beat them by 24. Can’t wait till Feb. 7!!

Oklahoma Cornerback is out for Fiesta Bowl »

ouchCBS Sportsline is reporting that Reggie Smith will miss the Fiesta Bowl because of a broken toe. Tis a shame!

I’ve read that WVU will need to figure out how to adjust to the D of OU and especially be able to adjust if they start crowding the line like PITT did last Saturday. Maybe this will be the incentive that Rich uses to actually let Pat White throw the damn ball down the field. Lyons and Renauld are just waiting to be the stars of a big game.

You know OU will come into this thinking we are a run first throw second type of team. A simple thing like throwing first- running second could make the difference. We have enough time to make this change in our offense.

I don’t know about you guys, but I want to see the Sugar Bowl Rodriguez coach this game. I remember watching one of the last plays of that game and standing up screamin’ “Coach rod’s got ballz of steel!” I couldn’t believe he would have the cojones to try a fake punt in that situation, but he did. It was so refreshing seeing something like that come from our side of the ball after years of Nehlen run up the middle style. Ever since that game though he’s coached a little tighter. Let’s go to Glendale and have some fun, throw the ball, fake a punt or two and kick some ass!

Recruiting News: Blair Irvin »

Blair IrvinBlue & Gold News (Scouts) and Rivals are both reporting that 3 Star CornerBack Blair Irvin has committed. Seems we stole a great CB from Auburn. So not only did we kick their ass the other day in BBall, we yanked a kid to fill a position we desperately need next year. Apparently his buddy Ford is going to WVU and was a big influence in this decision. Who cares how we get ‘em, just get ‘em.

Despite the losing to PITT it seems WVU is still going to do well in the recruiting world this year. Currently Rivals has us ranked #30 and the next Big East team is PITT at #37. Great news considering PITT usually kicks our butts in recruiting.

Maybe news is floating around to kids considering WVU that Slaton and White are both staying for their last year to win that damn National Championship. For positions like this and other D spots (which we will be taking a big hit with so many graduating) that is a very attractive proposition. They stay, Devine gets more carries, the D getting a solid freshman class would make it hard for WVU not to be ranked top #5 preseason again next year. I’m sure they are telling prospects, “If you want to play a game in January, come to WVU, not PITT.” I’m sure that’s working.

WVU has 14 commits, of which 4 are 4-star and 6 are 3-star recruits. Also, we are still in the running for the Top Ranked 5-star QB Pryor, although I feel that if White stays one more year we’ll lose him. A talent like Pryor should play from day 1.

WVU Crushes, (9)PITT gets lucky »

Welcome to HuggstownBig East Men’s basketball was in full force tonight. WVU kicked Auburn’s ass 88-59. Earlier, #9 PITT struggles against Duquesne 73-68. I can’t wait till Pitt comes to Huggstown, revenge will be sweet.

Take a deep breath… »

I posted this article in the comments section earlier today and after reading it again and talking with JWilson we thought it might deserve a full post.

Terry Bowden wrote about how the Backyard Brawl was his dad’s worst defeat ever. To my generation of fan, last Saturday’s loss to PITT might be the worst defeat we’ve witnessed, but there are generations before us who have felt this before and have been able to move on. We must do the same. Terry says this:

Well, the current Mountaineer coach is carrying an even bigger burden today. He probably feels like he let down his players, friends, family and fellow West “by God” Virginians. Rich Rodriguez is a great coach. He loves the Mountaineers. As a WVU and football letterman, I think he will one day end up as the greatest coach ever in the history of West Virginia University. The memory of this game will fade over time and will be overshadowed by championships instead.

Mountaineer fans need to rally behind our coach right now - we need to hug his neck and tell him how much we appreciate what he has done and is still doing for our football program. This one game will not define Coach Rod’s career. But the way we West Virginia fans respond to this gut-wrenching loss will define our true spirit.

JeremyC pointed out earlier, in a comment, that WVU will now have been to 5 New Year bowls (or better) in a row. I remember when we were happy to go to the flippin’ Tire Bowl. Let’s all take a deep breath and think about how great it is to be a Mountaineer these days. All of a sudden, we get disappointed when we don’t go to the National Championship Game. It’s quite amazing actually. I never thought I would be in the position I’m in now as a fan of WVU football.

Coach Rod has set the bar very high for us. So when something like this happens, it’s always going to be hard to take and it’s a big punch in the stomach.

Here is a comparison chart showing how what we expect as a fan now compared to just 7 years ago.

Evolution of a Mountaineer Fans Expectations

NOW

THEN

BCS Bowl Any Bowl.. please!!!
Win the Bowl Game Just happy to be there
Heisman contenders year after year How do you spell Hiesman?
Can’t buy season tickets Can’t sell season tickets (like PITT)
National TV Coverage almost every week Had to go to Morgantown to see the game
Heartbreak with every loss We drink if we win, We drink if we lose
8 wins = terrible season 8 wins = best season in years
Coaching Carousel stay away from our boy Rod! RETIRE NEHLEN!!!!
Spread ‘em and run up the middle!!! Just run up the middle
Mountaineer Pride Mountaineer Pride (that never changed)

I’m sure you guys can come with more of these. Coach Rod has changed the way we all think of WVU Football. For all he’s given us over the past 7 years, we owe him a big THANK YOU! Like Terry said, we need to rally behind our coach. He’ll get us there! Now if you get a chance, click on the button on the sidebar and vote for Coach Rod for Coach of the Year. Vote Now, Vote Often.
