Bulger and Sanni shine on Senior Day »

Meg Bulger and Yinka Sanni capped off Senior Day with 20 points each including 6 treys from Bulger as 13th-ranked West Virginia held on against star player Angel McCoughtry and the Louisville Cardinals 78-70 to clinch third-place in the Big East Conference. This win gives WVU the first-round bye for the second straight year. All seven seniors played for the Mountaineers which included a rare start by Kendra Goodley plus spirited play by Lateeyah Joye in a stretch the Eers needed the most when Sanni got four fouls early in the second half. McCoughtery rallied from a FG-less first half to score 29 points with 11 rebounds and five steals. WVU made just enough effort to carry a much-needed victory that almost didn’t happened. UCONN betters WVU despite Joe’s quality effort »

Joe Alexander scored a career-high 32 points for the West Virginia Mountaineers. Along with his 10 rebounds, Alexander arguably had one of the best individual performances a Mountaineer basketball player had in quite sometime. The same can’t be said for the rest of the team whose shoddy transition defense caused Husky point guard A.J. Price to have a career game of his own as UCONN withheld a furious Mountaineer comeback to win 79-71. Price scored 24 points on five three pointers. Frontcourt beast Jeff Adrien had another double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. 7′3″ Tanzanian Devil Hasheem Thabeet was plagued by foul trouble early and scored only 2 points with 2 rebounds in only 18 minutes. For a brief time on the court, Thabeet did have 3 blocks and altered a few of the Mountaineer shots as the Eers shot only 41 percent from the field. Take away Alexander’s 14 for 24 performance from the field plus making all four foul shots and WVU would’ve shot a horrid 32 percent not to mention 2 of 7 from the foul line.

At first glance, it appeared WVU was ready to play as they jumped out to a 10-4 lead on a three by The Rainmaker. UCONN decided to wake up and play basketball as they out-scored WVU 19-6 capped off by a dunk from Stanley Robinson to take a 23-16 lead. The Huskies would not let up as they went on another spurt, this time a 14-2 run to give UCONN a huge 37-23 lead. The Huskies cruised to a 12-point halftime lead. Read the rest »

WVU-UCONN showdown at high noon »

Now that the West Virginia Mountaineers got the road win they needed north of Chi-Town on Wednesday, it’s time to head to New England and accomplish something the Eers have never done in school history. WIN AT UCONN! They have lost in Huskie territory all six times including one back in February 2000 when, as the buzzer sounded, Khalid El-Amin scored on a desperation runner to win by one. Aside from that the Eers lost to UCONN on the road, in the other five games, by an average of 20 points. Read the rest »

Senior day for WVU women bball this afternoon »

For the seven seniors on the 13th ranked West Virginia women’s basketball roster, this is the end of the road. The most successful group of players in women’s basketball school history will be walking down the rolled out blue and gold carpet one last time. For star players Meg Bulger, Yinka Sanni, LaQuita Owens, and Chakhia Cole this is a bittersweet moment. Coach Mike Carey did a excellent job recruiting these four and turning around the program. They are now well respected in the Big East with a Top 15 ranking for most of the season. Let’s not also forget the other seniors who keep the wheels turning. Kendra Goodley, Lateefah Joye, and Ranisha White may not have played on a consistent basis but they still do a phenomenal job on and off the court and should be honored as well. Read the rest »

Bulger Dynasty Sadly Ends Saturday »

Saturday is Senior Day for the West Virginia women’s basketball team as they face Big East foe Louisville Cardinals. After a long arduous career Meg Bulger will be walking out on the famed Blue and Gold carpet with her proud parents. Meg’s last home game will be an emotional one in front of proud fans of WVU womens basketball. Not only is this the end of her career at the Coliseum but the end of the line of excellent athletes that graced WVU known as the Bulgers.

The three Bulgers grew up in Oakland just up the hill from the Pitt campus. Their dad was the backup to Joe Theismann in the early 70s for the University of Notre Dame. Despite the Irish bloodline the Mountaineers were blessed to have Marc become a star QB for the Mountaineers. Younger sister Kate was a star basketball player early this decade. Meg, the youngest, had one of the most storied careers to ever put on a Mountaineer uniform.

Today we at wvmountaineersports.com would like to celebrate the accomplishments of the Bulger clan, whose quality talents have shaped the football and women’s basketball programs. Read the rest »

PittsburghersPittsburgh Movie Casting Director Fired After Seeking Extras Who Looked Inbred
Maybe our bitching about how stereotypical Hollywood is toward WV worked a little bit. The casting agent got canned in less than one day after she opened her fat trap to the press about what type of extras they needed for this horror flick. Bitch got what she deserved. The people in Pittsburgh have no self awareness, it’s really peculiar.

WVU Rifle Team back in the tourney:

MORGANTOWN — West Virginia University, which has more NCAA rifle championships than any other school, has qualified for the national tournament for the first time since the university cut the sport’s funding five years ago. The Mountaineers, who last went to the tournament in 2002, will compete against Alaska-Fairbanks, Kentucky, Nebraska, Nevada-Reno, Texas Christian, Army and Navy on March 14 and 15 at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.

No broken bones!!!
Robert Byrd. The Man, The Myth, THe Legend busted his ass last night at his home and was rushed off to the hospital. The old fart is 90 and still kickin’ ass in the Senate. Maybe he should think about retiring and taking the open A.D. job in Morgantown. Lord knows he would be able to raise enough money for 2 new football facilities, a new coliseum, a PRT system that covers the whole state, and he could make one phone call to take care of the RR situation.

WVU handled their business tonight over DePaul »

The West Virginia Mountaineers from the very start were ready to play. After trading some baskets with the Blue Demons they embarked on a 22-0 run to catapult the Eers to a 33-9 lead. But you as a Mountie fan know how it is when the Eers are up too big too soon. DePaul started chipping away at the lead slowly. It didn’t help their cause as they were missing free throw after free throw. They were 3 of 14 foul shooting in the first half yet they cut the Mountie lead to 15 at 44-29 at the half. The anxiety grew at a rapid rate as DePaul came as close as five. Joe Alexander and the rest of the Mountaineers were not going to blow this lead and they held on for an 85-73 victory. WVU heads to DePaul in yet another huge road game »

DePaulWVUIt seems whenever West Virginia goes on a road trip we always point out that this is a huge game for the sought-after NCAA Tournament berth. Tonight’s game in the suburbs of Chi-town will determine whether West Virginia will be in the NCAA tournament or the Not Important Tournament. Simply put, West Virginia MUST WIN THIS GAME! They cannot look, act, or say they’re scared like they were against Villanova last week.

Yes, this is a business trip. We must seal the deal. This team must come out cocky, confident, and handle their business with relative ease. I can hear it in the locker room in their pre-game prep. An Ipod-worthy mix of “We Ready”, “Headstrong”, “Never Scarred” and other varieties of hardcore rap. It’s like a huge final exam to get an A in biology. No nerves, no worries, just get it done. The message is simple - West Virginia MUST WIN THIS GAME! The tipoff is at 9pm and will be televised on The Duece.

DePaul is hanging by the thread for a berth in the Big East Tournament. They are one game ahead of Providence and St. John’s for the dreaded 13th spot in the Big East Tournnament. Remember, only 12 teams can make it to NYC. DePaul from what I’ve learned has been known to have big leads only to blow it. Case in point, they were up by 17 against Villanova on January 16th only to lose by seven. Last Tuesday, DePaul had an 11-point lead over UCONN with five minutes left ON THEIR COURT. They promptly blew that lead and lost by five. While that’s a good sign for us they cannot fall behind like that. The Eers must come out the gate like a bat outta hell. Read the rest »

And They Keep Rolling In: Zach Hulce »

Zach HulceWell it seems that WVU has the attention of the JUCO world. As of this moment if you haven’t heard, we have added a talent from Glendale AZ in the form of 5′10″ 200 lb running back Zach Hulce.

Just a break down for you on Hulce:

  • He runs a 4.41 in the 40 yard (needless to say he’s fast) and he can be explosive when the situation calls for it.
  • In his senior season of football at Rogers High School in Puyallup, Washington he ran for 1,182 yards on 163 carries, and had 14 scores to his credit. His longest run of those carries was 96 yards.
  • Hulce also averaged out at the end of the 2005-2006 season at a very respectable 7.25 yards a carry.
  • From what I have found out about this guy he also played linebacker during his prep years.
  • During his sophomore year in Glendale, he was named to the All Western States Football League 2nd team as the Gauchos finished 6-4 overall.
  • He carried the ball 202 times for 1101 yards and 8 scores.
  • He averaged out at 5.5 yards a carry.

He easily adds depth to the running game at WVU, and could possibly switch to linebacker if he chooses with experience on the defensive side of the ball. We’ll see how it all pans out for Zach when summer practice and drills begin, and we would like to be among the first to welcome him to Mountaineer Nation.
