McAfee makes it three for three; joining Men’s Soccer team
It’s weird. In the course of one month we have three of the big name players of the football team branching out into other parts of the athletic programs at WVU. I can’t really remember a time in Mountaineer history this has happened, but I’m sure at some point it has.
First, you have Jarrett Brown making a start for the Men’s Basketball team, then Pat White declares his intentions to play baseball this season. Now, Pat McAfee will be starting soccer practices in the next couple of weeks. You know, I can almost bet you all a whole paycheck I wasn’t the only one thinking, ” OH MAN! I hope this doesn’t hurt their playing football next season.”
Selfish? Yeah I have to admit, a little anyway. But really, this is great news for these guys because they really want to broaden their goals for their upcoming graduating year. Having said that, let’s get hypothetical for a minute shall we?
These three gentlemen are talented enough to play football on the NFL level. But the pro’s see it like this:
- Jarrett Brown, hasn’t had enough playing time to showcase what he can do on the field unless he is needed to backup White.
- Pat White, very versatile and quick but not enough passing game to show how good he is (thanks to the joker that ran the locker room and his one dimensional offensive attack) at the quarterback position.
- Patrick McAfee. He is very athletic and can kick the ball or punt it whichever he wants to do, but is he someone they can see lasting quite a few years for a pro team?
Now you can say that the reason the three are doing this is for something else to possibly do professional in the future. While I do see there being a really good chance that Brown and White participate in different sports after graduation, I really don’t see McAfee straying from football. However, one never knows these days what anyone will do. But rest assured, these guys are going to have success at whatever they chose to do. But with their previous chosen sports in high school, I guess we shouldn’t be surprised they would give it a go before it was too late.
Good luck guys and GO MOUNTAINEERS!
