Jarrett Brown breaking in on the BBall team

Jarret BrownBackup quarterback Jarrett Brown is getting real comfortable with his new team during practice and shootaround. Now the question would be whether or not Brown will get some immediate minutes. This is Coach Huggs take on the situation.

“He is going to come out and we’re going to try to get him as caught up as we can,” Huggins said. “I think he is gifted as an athlete. Hopefully, he is someone that in a short period of time we can put in the game. Physically, he is ready to play, and my problem is that, physically, the guys at the end of the bench are just not ready physically to play yet. We have to get some guys so much stronger, and I won’t have a strength problem with him.”

Now how does Brown fit into the rotation? He is listed as 6-4 220 pounds. He has about two and a half years of eligibility left since he is a redshirt sophomore. According to Scout.com he was a 2-star caliber point guard at Palm Beach Lakes High School in West Palm Beach, Florida. He made all-state in his senior season there. With Darris Nichols starting the 1 spot, Joe Mazzulla backing him up plus Truck Bryant coming to WVU next season I expect Brown to play either the 2 or 3 spot. He will get probably 15-20 minutes a game at most depending on how he much he understands Coach Huggs’ playbook or spelling someone who’s under serious foul trouble or even when Coach Huggs decides to play some small ball.

He can be physical when it comes to defense and rebounding but in no way he is the answer in the frontcourt. Sure there are some smaller players out there at one time or another who can be a beast on the boards and Brown sure has the tenacity to be able to do it. On the other hand he can stroke the three point shot. I’m not saying he’ll shoot as good as The Rainmaker but it wouldn’t hurt to have another three-point threat in Coach Huggs’ arsenal.

No word yet if he’ll dress for the St. John’s game on Thursday. Wouldn’t it be something though if Brown makes his WVU basketball debut on Wednesday January 23rd against the hated Thundering Herd of Marshall on his birthday? Just a thought. He will wear number 31 which tells me he’ll be more of an athletic forward than a guard. We at wvmountaineersports.com wish him the best of luck for a successful Mountaineer basketball career.

Here’s an interesting tidbit I found this morning. According to the school newspaper Daily Athenaeum WVU’s new practice facility, if everything goes to plan, will open in time for the 2009-2010 season. The designer of the new faciltity is set on making this one of the best 12 practice venues in the country. That’s exciting news that should draw NBA-caliber talent on a yearly basis.

I’ll be at the Regatta Bar and Grill tonight to attend the Coach Huggs’ basketball radio show that airs on Metro News and their affiliates. I hope to take a few good snapshots and lay them out for you here.

Thanks Steve! Yeah no doubt we need that up front. If I only knew what Brown’s veritical was? Oh wait, Evil Rod shredded that up. Dang!

our D is looking weak in the last couple of games. the aggressive, swarming defense during the Tennessee game has been non-existent lately. they’ve been a little lazy and have been hacking way too much, especially Butler and Smalligan. i’d like to see Brown out on the floor with Flowers, Smith, Alexander…that would be impressive.

I went to the Regatta Bar and Grill and Coach Huggs said that Brown can really make shots plus be very physical. He stated that he’ll spell Ruoff and/or Butler if they’re tired or in foul trouble. We may see him in action for the St. John’s game.

chances of seeing Brown against St. Johns are pretty high since Butler can’t seem stay away from foul trouble lately
