According to Metronews early this morning, Coach Bill Stewart will deservingly be given the opportunity to coach the WVU football team for the 2008 season.

WVU will name Bill Stewart the new Mountaineer football coach, sources confirmed for Metronews early Thursday morning. The announcement is expected to come later this morning in Scottsdale, AZ.The development comes just hours after WVU’s stunning 48-28 victory over Oklahoma in the Tostitos Fiesta BowlClearly, Stewart has the support of the team.

“He needs that job, ” said quarterback Pat White shortly after the game. “He deserves it, the head coaching job.”

I think this is a great decision.

1. The contract should be short with loads of bonuses.

2. Did anyone else almost tear up when Owen Schmitt was talking at the end of the game?

3. I cannot wait for the 2008 season…. already, I think I could win 10 games with the talent WVU still has returning next year.

4. While Coach Stew might not be the most qualified or “best” coach for the job, I do not think there is anyone more deserving or a better person for the job. He is a great motivator and deserves a chance to move the WVU program towards our goal of becoming a national contender every year. Tonight was a giant step.

5. Finally, its a great night/day to be a mountaineer wherever you may be. A huge thank you to the coaching staff, seniors, all of the players, and fans for making this a great season to remember, despite things that might have been.

Stewart was head coach at VMI from 1994-96, compiling an 8-25 record. How can you decide on just one game? Big mistake, recruiting will go down, the players won that game last night, not Rods offense, not coach Stew, o well, more turmoil in future. Just shouldn’t let the players decide such a important decision. Puts a damper on such a great game, all a emotional hire, bummer.

I think the emotion of the game brought out a very bad decision. I think the players shouldnt be allowed to makes those decisions either and they were emotional and lobbied for stewart out of emotion of their biggest win in school history.U cant make rashonal decisions when u are emotional. If they want to reach their goal of national notoriety then this was not the route to go. He has no coaching experience as the head coach and at vmi, his only experience, stewart went 8-25. Kids love him bc he was nice to him because he wasnt in a position to be the disinipilarian. The reason he left vmi was because of a racial slur he used against a player. he wont be able to do that in motown. Iam truly scared for the mounties in the future. Heck all stewart did in the fiesta bowl was stand on the sidelines. Calvin megee offensive coordinator was the one calling the plays and he’s heading to michigan. Ok they do have the foundation, the offense down, but who is going to run it? coach stew? I dont think so! Saban, bowden, butch jones or holliday could have kept our dreams of national championshaps on track! Now our worst nightmare is about to come true.

Those two comments couldn’t be any farther from the truth. The truth is, is this guy kept this team from giving up. You are right, Bill Stewart did compile a record of 8-25 at a college football powerhouse and blue-chip recruit getting VMI. Every coach needs players and I am pretty sure that VMI isn’t the place for talented players to play. This is the kind of guy you need. He is a players coach and always has been. He motivates through example and holds himself to higher set of standards. He doesn’t have motivate through fear. I would never want to hear my father say he was disappointed in me. Would you? He is that guy. He is a father figure. Bill Stewart will get the recruits and he will get the best of his players and they will follow him no matter what. I heard Terry Bowden’s name in one of those comments. Come on, lets be serious here. How is recruiting going to be any worse than if we had hired a guy that has had no ties to college football, other than talking about it on ABC, for 10 years? Doc Holliday was going bring back Bill Legg and Steve Dunlap. I think that speaks for itself. Butch Jones has one year of head coaching experience and those aren’t even his players. These are Bill Stewarts players he helped recruit all of them. The players know and respect him as well as they believe in him and that belief and respect came long before the Fiesta Bowl. Bill Stewart paid his dues and it is now his time to lead this team and in my opinion shut you two up.

1 year or not that is more experience than stewart has. Players may love him but gettin them here is another thing. Stewart recruited for wv under rodriguez. Mainly the players recruited came to play because of coach rod and the spread offense. The blue chip players that had a verbal committment ex. Terrell pryor and jenkins wont come to wvu because coach rod is gone. stewart couldnt keep them here. Just because he is liked by the players isnt going to make him a good coach.

but you are right. He is a great guy, with wvu ties and a great family man. I know many people that fit that description but are not coaches and shouldnt be. I wish him the best and i hope to god we are successful

Did the CEO of IBM start at the top? The man (Stu) deserves a chance and if you consider yourself a true Mountaineer, you will give him one. The latest skinny is……Jenkins is again considering WV as top prospect. L Rod will soon find out that losing a big game in Michigan is not the same as DUMPING the Pitt games to go to Michigan. A loss in Michigan is much more serious….a loss to Ohio State will show you what I mean. I would love to know when L Rod contacted Michigan….no BS…..I would venture it was BEFORE the Pitt loss. We may never know.

research it online cecil. There are many articles detailing the failed relationship with coach rod and the Ed Pastilong dating rite before the uconn game. How early before that it doesnt say. But you could tell his heart wasnt in the pitt game. Also i never said i wasnt gonna give him a chance. regardless I have too and I just wish they would have lloked into it a little bit further and not based it on one win and on wv ties, players loving him, or regardless of how great a family man he is. I just dont want to see the program run down hill

I’m going to back him 100%, beleave me I hope he does good. Only thing I likes about Frud, was him recruting. Just hope the recruits and get a good assitant coaching are the keys. T he opening game next yr, Auburn, wow, big game huh? I would have been more dissapointied if they did hire Bowden, I wish Stew the best, just the emotional hire in such a short time after a long process, just didn’t seem right. Why didn’t they appoint him before the game? Just seems it was all decieded on one game to me.
