Bringing the “Let’s GOOO MOUNTAINEEERS” chant back to life
OK, There has been some talk this week on MSNSportsNet and via our Twitter feed @Mountaineer about bringing the “old” Let’s Gooooooo Mountaineeeers chant back to life.
When I first read this I was confused about what exactly they were talking about. I am aware of 3 WVU cheers at a WVU football game:
- The LETS GO / MOUNTAINEERS that switches from each side of the stadium. We all love this one and it’s quite spectacular if you’ve never heard it.
- The first down chant.. “WOO WOO WOO FIRST DOWN!” and everyone give the first down gesture in the direction WVU is going.
- Finally The “Lets Gooooo Mountaineers” chant. Each individual would just say this chant over and over again while pumping your fist in the air during GOOO and EEER.
Well apparently #3 is the original cheer and it is slowly going away. I personally do this cheer in every WVU football game I’ve been too and it always seems to me that every one else is doing it. I think if you went to games within the last 10 years you will be familiar with it. Hmmm maybe it was a conspiracy by Rich Rod to get rid of it??
But alas, it seems there are some that haven’t heard it or done it and there is a movement to bring it back BIG TIME at the Thursday Night Colorado Game on ESPN.

I think this demonstration is good but it’s a little off because he’s not screaming it during the throws of a great WVU game. Trust me, this is a cool chant and I agree that we should bring it back to life.

I have been to many Mountaineer away games, and as it is pointed out in the instructional video, it is common pracice to use this cheer because Mountaineer fans are the minority at away games. And MountaineerBob, you might be right about the RichRod conspiracy. I always heard this cheer in the parking lots in front of Ruby while the band made its way into Mountaineer field, but I don’t remember it at all while he was in Morgantown. I tweeted this too – but in our section, on first downs we say “W-V-U First Down!” – interesting how it’s different even between sections in the stadium.
I too think the Let’s GOOOOOOOOOOO Mountaineers started to go the wayside when RR was here – it is the cheer I most remember from growing up at Mountaineer Field!
I hear it a lot, but have missed it as a full crowd cheer/chant. I think the chaos of it was incredibe in the early days of new mountaineer field. It’s part of what made morgantown a scary place for visiting teams. I’m glad someone wants to bring it back. Now if I can just get the lame asses in sec. 101 to get off their asses and cheer.
I was a student at WVU back in the late 70’s and went to games at both the old Mountaineer field and the new stadium. The “Let’s Gooooooo Mountaineers” chant was very popular then. I remember the arm movement as more of a hammer movement where the arm was fully extended as the Gooooooooo and Mountaineeeeeeeeeeeers was held. I’ll being doing this cheer at the Carrier Dome on Oct. 10th.
