Breaking down the Pac-10
By John Wilson on Sep 24, 2007 in Big East, Football, Rantings
I don’t know about you, but I’m sick of hearing about the Pac-10. I heard Herbstreit say, “This year the conferences go #1) Pac 10, #2) SEC and then way down below would be the Big East and the Big Ten.” C’mon Kirk, I’m a big fan of yours, but the Pac 10? And, how can you put the Big 10 even in the same sentence as. The Big East. (See, I can’t even do it). My dad keeps asking if Ohio State moved to the MAC because every time you turn on the TV they are playing in the MAC (Akron, Kent State or I-AA Youngstown State).
The Pac 10 is currently 26-12, 6-8 on the road, 1-7 versus AP top 25 teams, and 1-6 versus USA today top 25. Strong showing guys. The Big East is 23-7, 7-3 on the road, and 0-1/0-1 respectively.
There is absolutely no doubt that the SEC is the toughest conference. With Florida and LSU at the top, a strong middle tier of Kentucky, Georgia and Alabama and a respectable lower tier of South Carolina, Tennessee and Auburn (usually)… you have to put on your game face every single Saturday. I am confident that neither Florida, LSU or Kentucky will go undefeated this season. There are too many landmines in the SEC which make it the strongest conference in the country.
Then where do you go? I would say it is between the Pac 10 and the Big East. Last year the Big East went 5-0 in bowl games. The Pac 10 went 3-3. Combined with the current records from above, I have to give the nod to the Big East. Arguments for the Big 10 fall on deaf ears here, so save them. My rankings are as follows:
1) SEC (no brainer)
2) Big East (currently, this could drop)
3) Pac 10
4) Big 12
5) ACC
HM) Big Ten
Think I’m crazy? Leave your rankings or rantings in the comments.

If Herbstreit keeps this bullshit up, he’s going to start feeling the heat from the Mountie fans and he’ll never be able to come to Morgantown for College Game Day.

With all of last year’s records aside and based solely on performance this year, I would break it down like this:
1. SEC (Hands down there is no other conference with the level of competition that is in the SEC. LSU, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Auburn, Alabama, and even Kentucky and Ole Miss….Granted Auburn, UT, and Bama aren’t having banner years for their program, I still believe they could go into a few other conferences and upset some of their top teams)
2. Big 12 (Big 12 is fairly solid. They have to be on almost every single game. There are a couple of games they might be able to skate by on, but for the most part, if they’re not on every Saturday there’s a good chance that they are going to be upset)
3. PAC 10 (This pains me to say. It was between PAC 10 and Big East, but what keeps sticking out are Louisville’s two big losses to Kentucky and Syracuse.)
4. Big East (A continuation from #3 basically. I didn’t rank PAC 10 #3 because their teams are that much more talented, I just haven’t really bought into the Big East…yet. Besides West Virginia, Louisville was the only real power team in the conference. Say what you want about Rutgers and now South Florida, but I just don’t feel like they’re there yet. They’re getting there, but they don’t step onto the field week in and week out and everyone expects them to win.)
5. Big Ten (Personally I feel it’s one of the most overrated conferences in college football…Michigan…need I say more?)
6. ACC (When/if the teams in the ACC get back to being the teams of their hey-day [Miami, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech] they could be a force to be reckoned with…but right now they just can’t compete.)
7. Everyone else
