The West Virginia Mountaineer women’s basketball team, remaining 13th in this week’s AP and Coaches polls, will clinch a first-round bye in the Big East Tournament if they defeat the sPittsburgh Panthers for the second time this season tonight.
The game will be played at the Petersen Events Center with the tipoff at 8pm and will will be televised only on CSTV so for Dish Network subscribers you’re in luck. I can’t say the same for the rest of you. The Mounties have won three consecutive times at the Pete. sPitt have lost four straight Big East games that started with a 56-35 annihilation of the Mountaineers at the WVU Coliseum nearly two weeks ago.
The free fall the Panthers are suffering has knocked them out of the Top 25. They still have a chance to capture their own first-round bye if they can defeat the Eers and also beat South Florida and Georgetown, both winnable teams.
Senior guard LaQuita Owens is back practicing however she still remains questionable for tonight’s game. If she’s not available to play you can rest assure Meg Bulger, Liz Repella, and Kelly Smith will pick up the slack in her place. Will the WVU defense be able to have a repeat performance of giving up 20.3 perfect shooting against the hated Panthers? With an expected jacked-up crowd of about 2,500 you can expect Pitt will give the Mounties their best shot let’s just hope they miss them all. Good luck women, get it done, and GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MOUNTAINEERS!
