A Sooner Speaks: Part II
By MountaineerBob on Dec 23, 2007 in Football
In Part 2 of the Sooner/WVU Q and A we find out what it all means….
US: What does Sooner football mean to the state of Okla.?
Them: Well, everything. I guess everything that Oklahoma State doesn’t mean, but OU reigns in Oklahoma. I’ve spent some time in small towns in Oklahoma (my parents both hail from different parts of the state) and I’ve seen first hand what OU means to these people. I’m sure it definitely compares to what the Mountaineers mean to West Virginia. Everyone talks about it. My grandparents know more about OU football than I could ever imagine. Everyone gets into it. Everyone talks stats. Kids in schools debate about who is the best Sooner ever. They discuss stats from 1960 like it was a subject in school. The entire state seems to revolve around what the Sooners have been accomplishing. It truly is an obsession, an obsession to be welcomed and cherished.

Replace OU with WV and Sooner with Mountaineer in your blog and you might have an idea of what WV football means here. However, the state of Oklahoma’s population is 3.6 million and the OU endowment is 1.2 Billion. The population of WV is 1.8 million and our endowment is only 380 Million. OU is only slightly larger in student registration, 22000 WV 29000 OU.
How have we managed to become the most winning program in the history of college football without a national championship and have the most heisman nominees without a winner? Young and old, the everyone in the state lives and dies Mountaineer Football. Why is the governor so involved in WVU football and coaching? He could loose his job in the next election as the states leader and a WVU alum that did not use his position to make sure Mountaineer Football continues to succeed on the national stage. We are a small state and a poor state, but a proud state of loyal, honest, hard working, polite and welcoming people of unequaled pride. The consequential underdogs who’s dreams are lived through Mountaineer Football. That is how we stay among the ranks of elite teams much larger and richer than we are for years.
Ya’ll come visit now and we’ll show ya how to celebrate a win, roastin marshmallows on a couch in the middle of a main street in Morgantown.
