13th-ranked WVU women rolls past Cincy 82-63

For the second straight game, the West Virginia women’s basketball team had to overcome a barrage of treys.  This time, however, they had an easier time against a lesser opponent.  Meg Bulger scored 20 points to lead five scorers in double figures as the Mountaineers achieved a successful road victory over the Cincinnati Bearcats.  The Bearcats made 13 three’s, at one point they were 12 of 18, but the Mountaineer bench were the difference as Bulger, freshman Liz Repella, and even relative-unknown Kelly Smith all scored in double figures.  They outscored the Cincy bench a whopping 43-7.  As a team West Virginia shot 57 percent from the field.

Cincy made their three’s early and often with the main culprit being Kahla Roudebush.  Her third trey in the first 8 minutes give the Cats a shocking 18-13 lead.  WVU countered back with a couple of runs most notably a 9-0 run capped off by a Sparkle Davis jumper to give the Eers 30-24 lead.  The barrage continued as Carla Jacobs made the Cats ninth three of the half to give them a 34-33 lead.  West Virginia would scored the final 13 points of the half to give them a sizable halftime lead of twelve at 46-34.

Cincy would not go away quietly as Roudebush hit another three to cut the Mountie lead to seven.  The Eers tried to counter back with three’s off their own from LaQuita Owens and Bulger but Cincy tried to make it a game as they ultimately got as close as six points at 58-52 with 13:12 remaining.  The Mountaineer depth was too much for Cincy as they embark on a 13-4 in the next 6 minutes to bring the lead up to 15.  Cincy had no answer and the Mountaineers would cruise from there.

Despite the loss, Roudebush lead all scorers with 22 points on 6 of 8 3-pt shooting.  Cincy falls to 11-14 2-11 in the Big East.  The Mountaineers are now 21-4 with a conference record of 10-2.  They will play again Saturday afternoon as they face another 3-point shooting team in the Villanova Wildcats.  The tipoff will be 4pm.  They will play before the men’s game against Providence on Saturday night.  Once again, let’s get some good support like the one last Saturday.  Congrats WVU women and GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MOUNTAINEERS!

I was one of about 30-40 WVU fans at the UC game tonight. It’s the first WVU women’s game I’ve seen in quite awhile and they were impressive. Excellent shooting and frequently swarming defense. I enjoyed watching the team and hope to see more of them as the tournaments approach.

Oh, and go Liz Repella, from my high school, Steubenville High School. Nice shooting tonight.

NICE! Thanks for your support out in Cincy. Liz certainly looks like a star in the making for the Eers.
